Travelling by train (and why you should too)

Travelling by train has been a popular means of transportation for decades, but we still often find ourselves nowadays rather using planes and cars to get to our destination. That is, even though trains offer a unique travel experience that cannot be matched by other modes of transportation. In this blog post, I will discuss the benefits of travelling by train and why you should definitely consider it for your next trip.

Comfort and convenience

Travelling by train is comfy and convenient. You can stretch your legs, walk around the train, have a relaxing dinner in the restaurant carriage, which is all not possible in a plane. In fact, some of my favourite moments on trains have been those of being able to walk to another carriage, whilst the sun was setting outside and then have a glass of wine and get to know knew people. Additionally, you don't have to worry about driving, navigating, or finding parking spaces, which you have to when driving a car, which can be utterly stressful. Also, travelling by night train is a whole other world, and such a tremendous experience that I would full-heartedly recommend it to everyone.

Travelling by train is often less expensive than other modes of transportation, especially if you book your ticket in advance. Train fares are usually fixed, so you won't have to worry about unexpected price hikes. Moreover, there are several discount options available for train travel, such as senior citizen discounts, student discounts, and group discounts.

If you are travelling in Europe, we highly encourage you to use Interrail-passes for international train travels. They make travelling by train a breeze. No need to worry about train tickets at all! All you need is your Interrail pass in the palm of your hand (and preferably also a phone). Interrail-passes also make travelling utterly affordable. Whenever I tell friends about my experiences of travelling from Finland to Central Europe by train, the first question always touches upon time and money. Well, I am glad to tell you that time flies by and tickets (even when using night trains) only seldom cost more than a plane ticket. So really, it's just a question of attitude.

If you ever need help with planning your trip in Europe, and are unsure about how to get started or do your planning, feel free to send us a message, and we will be glad to help you and give you some tips!

Scenic views

Train travel offers breathtaking views that you cannot experience in any other mode of transportation. Train routes often pass through mountains, forests, and other scenic landscapes that offer a unique travel experience. You can sit back, relax, enjoy your favourite podcast, all whilst enjoying those spectacular views.

Environmentally friendly

Travelling by train is environmentally friendly because it produces far fewer emissions than cars or planes. Trains usually use electricity to power their engines, which is cleaner than the fossil fuels used by cars and planes. In addition to that, trains are very energy-efficient and thus help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Secondly, trains are capable of transporting large numbers of people at once, which reduces the number of individual cars on the road. This can help alleviate traffic congestion and reduce air pollution, which is a major problem in many cities around the world.

Additionally, trains can help support the development of sustainable communities. Train stations are often located in urban centres, making it easy for people to access jobs, schools, and other amenities without relying on cars. This can help reduce the need for personal vehicles and promote more sustainable modes of transportation.

Overall, travelling by train can have a positive impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions, alleviating traffic congestion, and promoting sustainable communities. We highly encourage everyone to use trains for travelling whenever possible. Personally, I thought this was in many cases impossible – like when for example travelling from Finland to Central Europe. However, only your imagination and will is your limitation, and you will soon find out that travelling by train over long distances is really not rocket science.

Social experience

Train travel offers a social experience that cannot be matched by other modes of transportation. You have the opportunity to meet new people and interact with them during your journey. You can also enjoy meals, snacks, and drinks in the restaurant coach, as explained before, making train travel a more social and enjoyable experience.

In conclusion, travelling by train has several benefits that make it an attractive option for your next trip. It offers comfort, convenience, cost-effectiveness, scenic views, environmental sustainability, and a social experience that cannot be matched by other modes of transportation. So, the next time you plan your trip, consider travelling by train and enjoy the journey.
